Niagara Glen Trail

The one place I have resisted going this entire journey is Niagara Falls. This week I made it to the Niagara River.

Growing up in the area means that a trip to Niagara Falls is just a trip to see some water. For us, it is something to glance at before going elsewhere. I understand that people all over the world come to this area, just to see the power it contains. For a local girl I would rather not be around the tourists. I promise that one day I will go to the actual falls to film, but for now here is the river and whirlpool.

The inspiration to visit the Niagara Glen Trail was thanks to AllTrails. It was one I saved months ago after hearing about it, and this week I wanted somewhere closer to home but still outside while it’s warm. I did take a look if it was worth crossing the border to visit Devil’s Hole State Park, but the reviews I found did not indicate it was worth the extra time to get there. So Canadian side it is!

Getting to this location was very easy. A Tuesday in November meant I had no trouble parking either. It was $5 an hour for parking, which made me rush a little while on the trail, as I didn’t want to pay more than that. I would say that after doing the trail $10 is a bargain for this beautiful area.

There are five flights of stairs to get down into the gorge. Getting down was not a problem but get back up would take me a bit longer. The trails were all marked really well, even though the leaves covered where they should have been. The leaves did cause a slipping hazard, as did all the rocks. I would not recommend these trails for small children, or anyone with mobility issues.

Next time I come I will definitely bring more of a snack and water. It was only an hour, but it was a lot of work for someone who only hikes a few times a month. There were tons of gorgeous spots to sit and rest. The rock faces and river views made it easily my favourite hike of the year. However, I was there in the off-season. I have a feeling that visiting here on a weekend in the summer means the place is absolutely overrun by tourists. Something to be weary of if you’re doing this trip to get away from busy areas.

I would highly recommend this trail, especially on a Tuesday in November. The beauty of the surroundings and the difficulty of the trail meant more than a simple walk in the park. I am already considering heading over the border to hike the American side. Do you think I should?
